The customs officials are unhelpful and very corrupt and cause untold amount of grief to passengers just to line their pockets. A great introduction to Amazing India??? Be firm and if necessary ask to speak to someone in charge.

Hi,
I'm an Indian staying abroad. I visit India every year and last time I landed in Mumbai. Every Indian returning home will be very excited when they first land in home. But for me it was a disaster. I know this is not a place to complain. But it was so embarrasing that I'll never ever land in Mumbai again. The people at the baggage claim are so horrible, they are no different from local rowdi's. They took my baggage from the carousel and demanded $20 for releasing it. When I asked the reason they started to threaten me and one of those actually put his hand in my pocket to grab the money. The saddest part is that police were around and they didn't even come for rescue. I never expected this and was in absolute shock. As long as the people are like that people hate to land in mumbai. Please take it seriously and make sure it doesn't happen to people who come home after a long time....
Thanks
Kali

Please have some pictures of the general area of the airport so we travellers have some perspectives on how pretty a city you have unless your website omitt it for security purposes. I would like to know more about the infrastructure and how to do business with locals in remote cities in India.

On Sunday 13th November, I returned from Bhubaneswar to Mumbai by Indian Airlines flight IC 169. I had to go to the West End Hotel, in front of the Bombay Hospital. At the counter of prepaid taxis, inside the airport building, they offered me a non A/C car for Rs 700. As a friend had told me that the taxis fares were between Rs 350 and Rs 400, I refused and went out with the idea of boarding a common taxi. At the exit of the building, there were about 10 to 15 men shouting at the same time, offering their services as “prepaid” taxis. I addressed one and asked him about his fares. The conversation was as below:
Me: - How much is up to West End Hotel, next to Bombay Hospital?
The man: - I have the list there (signaling to a vague space near the street, taking my luggage and starting to walk quickly)
Me: - How much is up to West End Hotel, next to Bombay Hospital?
The man: - I have the list here in the car (a driver was already opening the trunk of his taxi and my luggage went there, while I was signaled to board the back seat)
The man took a list from somewhere while sitting in the front seat together with the driver, and the taxi started.
Me: - Wait!!! First tell me how much is up to West End Hotel, next to Bombay Hospital?
The man was pointing out to a line in the list he was holding which showed Rs 850 therefore I told him it was too expensive and asked him to stop the car. So he quickly said: - This is the rate for A/C cars and as you see you as in a non A/C car, so it will be Rs 600.
I agreed and he started to write a receipt. I gave him Rs 600, one Rs 100 note and one Rs 500 note. He showed me the Rs 500 note and said as it was torn I should give him another bill. So I gave him a new one. This time he made a quick movement and he showed me a Rs 100 note saying that I had given him only Rs 200. First I denied it as I knew perfectly well that I had all my Rs 500 notes together. But he menacingly insisted that I had given him only Rs 200, while peeking inside my handbag. This scared me so I gave him another Rs 500 note and he gave me the Rs 100 bill back.
As soon as he took the money, suddenly the taxi stopped and both the driver and this man got off the taxi and moved away. The man opened the trunk and took out my luggage. Obviously I got off quickly and run after him asking him where he was taking my luggage.
He put my luggage into another taxi and talked to the driver in a language I could not understand. He told me that this new driver would take me to the hotel and that I should not pay to him (anyway, why would I if I had already paid him?).
This new taxi started running at high speed through places unknown to me, places looking vaguely ominous moreover because I knew I had been cheated and now I was afraid of being kidnapped.
This driver kept on running at high speed and after 40 minutes I asked him whether we were near the hotel or the Bombay Hospital but he spoke no English. At that time I was seriously considering jumping off the taxi but wondering how I would be able to jump if part of my luggage was on the front seat. And the driver was looking at it from time to time as if appraising its contents…
After 10 minutes more, I asked again about Bombay Hospital and this time I showed him my watch, so he replied “five minutes”. After almost one hour after boarding the first “fake” taxi at the airport, I finally reached the hotel. But I was in a total state of shock. The tension during that one hour ride had been too much.
The scheme of changing banknotes is an old one. I knew the trick as I come from Argentina and they used to do the same with some variations. But in Mumbai I was a foreigner, outnumbered by the two men sitting at the front and we were in a moving car in a city unknown to me, without knowing Marathi. I was defenseless and in a weak position, with a lot to lose and nothing to gain by trying to fight them back. Therefore I accepted to pay Rs 500 more, and accepted the probably fake Rs 500 and Rs 100 banknotes they gave me. I only wanted to reach the hotel with my entire luggage and in one piece.
Surely I was neither the first victim nor the last one… But why there should be any victims? Why is there this kind of “taxi mafia” at the airport? Why the airport authorities allow them to assault the passengers arriving there? It is a very bad image of the country for us, foreigners, who come to India because we love India. Of course this will not stop tourists to keep coming to India so why bother, right? However, if you want that your country is considered seriously, and not a risky place, this type of incidents should be controlled and eliminated. This is only one example of the corruption at many (too many) places, as the man at a temple in Bhubaneswar who didn’t want to sell me an entrance ticket because it was near closing time but quickly offered to let me pass if I gave him (not to the institution) the same amount of money. Of course I didn’t accept and so I couldn’t finally see the monument.
The number of the second taxi is: MX-01-6346-C-2000.

I am visiting India for the first time via other airports outside India. I looked at their website and was impressed at the way they have been laid out. Since I would land and take off from Mumbai airport i wanted to see what facilities it has and other information to make my experince smooth. I am realy disappointed at the mumbaiairport site as it has most useless information. It has many ads to pay for it i guess. Web sites these days dont cost much and should be made attractive and inviting for tourist like me. Designer of this website and the person who commissioned it should have visited other intrnational airport websites to investigate wht information to put in and not look into making income out of it. It should be created with more info like dutyfree shops, internet facility, keft luggage, maps of airport termonals etc.

Due to the current problems at Mumbai and the difficulty in finding out up to date information do you not think it would be sensible to keep your customers informed of the most current information on your website!! It is the easiest and quickest way to get information to people and yet I cannot see anywhere that the airport is even closed let alone when it may reopen, there really is no point in having this facility if you do not use it to it's full potential!!!

I would like to report poor service i and my fellow passengers received at the airport. Very few airport staff were alloted to take care of the passengers needs. Only one bus to transport 400 passengers from international terminal to local terminal. Had to wait for 4 hours to get to domestic terminal. Missed the connecting flight and had to wait 4 more hours to catch the next flight.
Restrooms(toilet room)smelled really bad. (Need ventilation) I suggest if you want customers to come back, please train your staff to be able to handle crowd and to provide adequate transportation facilities from one terminal to another.
Thanks

There is no proper information counter where passengers can enquire different modes of transport to go within Maharashtra and the immediate neighbouring states. i.e. Coach services, cab services etc. Counter holders in the building premises are just taking advantage of the situation of odd hours.

Intercity Coach and Cab services should be displayed on prominent boards on both the terminals for the information of the Passengers for their selection. Need not necessarily be a Govt. approved or a counter holder.
